Lip Product Allergic Reaction - Again?!

Oh the joy of having allergic reactions to lip balms. Last time it was the EOS lip balm, which I have a post on HERE. This time it is Nivea's lip balms. I have the Touch of Smoothness and Milk & Honey balms. I used this product on Saturday (4 days ago) and yesterday I started having a dry patch above my lip. Now, it is absolutely horrible.

Not only is this embarrassing, it is also very painful. The bottom of my lip looks and feels raw. My top lip felt like it was forming little bumps, but now it is just dry skin. I know this picture isn't flattering, but when searching for this problem there is no good pictures really showing what happens. Now I found a connection between these Nivea lip balms and the EOS. They both have Beeswax in them. I think this may be the problem even though I have never had this problem in the past. EOS's first ingredient is Beeswax and Nivea has it almost at the end of the list. Either way, I am going to start really reading labels to my lip products because this is not a fun problem to have.

If you have a question, please leave it in the comments below and I will comment back ASAP!

  1. I have had the same problem! Not with Eos or Nivea, but I bought cheap lipstick from H&M and my lips look the SAME as in your pictures. I don't know what is in the lipstick that caused the rash either :/

    1. I'm not sure. I'm thinking it may be beeswax? Did the H&M lipstick have that in it?

    1. I used Vaseline a lot and that helped! Make sure you put it on at night before you go to sleep and during the day.

  3. I think it's an allergic reaction to jojoba oil. I had the same problems with eos where i broke out with really uncomfortable blisters and a rash after using it and looked up its ingredients and googled each of them jojobas allergy symptoms are ... "A typical allergy to jojoba is characterized by rapid onset of symptoms such as itching, redness, rashes and blisters" and googling Nivea's lip balm it also has jojoba oil in it. I'm not completely sure if thats what it might be but I'm going to start using products without jojoba oil.. just though i'd share!

    1. I would've never thought it was an oil that would cause this. Maybe it is! I would think they would keep it out of products if that many people have reactions to it!

    2. wow, this is interesting. I am sorry for your allergic reaction. Unless you have an allergy to honey and bee products (that some people have) beeswax sound strange. Allergy to jojoba sound more probable as it is a nut and many people have an allergy to nut, some more and some less. Maybe you could try looking into it and I hope you find the cause :) Have you ever considered making your own lipbalms? I used to be very dissatisfied with the lipbalms in the market, so I started making mine and I am happy. Although, I still love But's Bees. They are my favourites :)

  4. I am so thankful I found this site. My son has had this reaction. He had dry lips, used EOS not until a few weeks did he have the reaction. It got better when we changed to petroleum jelly and a lip balm with hemp oil. He lost his hemp oil and used a EOS and it flared up again!

    1. I'm glad you found this as well. It was hard for me to find anything on this topic online when I had the reaction. I'm glad you found a solution for him also :)

  5. I think it's jojoba oil in the EOS. I've been having the same problem since Aug 2013 but not as severe as your picture. My lips turned more dark (like dark purple spots) with irritation and dryness.
I stopped using EOS and tried to use all the natural ones, but it still didn't get better..if not a little worse with more itching.
I switched to Burt's Bees which didn't do much, so i bought Carmex healing lip balm...which felt nice but after a couple months use, I started itching real bad. I'm at the bottom of the jar and I changed to Jurlique Love Balm..same issue.
Just today I switched to my old chapstick I used to use a couple years back (Blistex medicated ointment) and my lips feel so much better.

I"m going to avoid all Jojoba oil and beeswax formulated lip balms..

    1. It's weird because I have Jajoba oil in face products that never bother me. I think it may be beeswax in my situation

    2. sounds that it might be the beeswax then for you if you don't have problems with jojoba in the rest of your products...

  6. My reactions are coming from Lypsyl Original I think.. .no jojoba or beeswax in it.. petrolatum, paraffin, glyceryl stearate SE, paraffinum liquidum, zinc oxide, tocopheryl acetate, Aloe barbadensis and "aroma".

  7. I had an allergic reaction to e.l.f. moisturizing lipstick. I had ended up with perioral dermatitis this past winter but still haven't figured out what I'm allergic to. I'll have to look into the jojoba oil.

  9. I recently had multiple severe reactions to Almay waterproof mascara. The parent company, Revlon, palpably does NOT care. If I can ever get ahold of anybody at their company I plan to ask for a full ingredient list so I can hopefully figure out what caused cracked, burning, and peeling eyelids (yes, eyelids. It was so fun.). My eyes are so sensitized at this point from whatever chemical was in there that I can't wear any eye makeup whatsoever, even ones I had formerly used for many years.

  10. I have had the same reaction with the EOS lip balms (the pink one).. I really thought I was going crazy. I would use the lip balm and then a few hours later I would have a rash/blisters on the side of my lip.. Took a break for a few months, used it again, BAM happened again!!
So I said let me buy a different one. Tried a different one and AGAIN it happened. Rash on the side of my lips..

  12. I had horrible problems with the burning, peeling and blistered and cracked (raw) corners of my mouth after using the EOS. I cured it in two days by sleeping with raw honey on my lips and burned areas and kept Carmex on during the day. Now I use Desert essence lip balm and I'm fine. Used a friend's EOS the other night and it returned full force the next morning. Kept a jar of raw honey with me and Kelly it on during the day and I was cured by 3pm.

  13. I have the same problem as you. My lips don't look as bad but I use EOS every night before I go to bed. I started new flavor of EOS about a week ago and a few days later the rash came. The EOS was the light blue one. Peppermint I think. So annoying. But I don't get these rashes with any other of the EOS favors. Weird. Do u know why I only get a rash from the peppermint and not the other favors?

  14. I suffered from a minor sunburn on my lips from going to the beach one day, consequently my lips became very dry. I decided to try Carmex for the first time, for the extra moisture. Within hours of the first application, my lips became swollen with fine bumps, and my bottom lip felt and looked raw. It was so scary and confusing. I immediately bought Blistex medicated lip balm and that has provided me with the most relief! I've been applying it several times a day for the past 3 days and my lips are almost back to normal. I assume that the skin around my lips and on my lips will peel soon. After some research, I believe that my issue is an allergy to the Lanolin in Carmex.
